Why Is Machine Alignment Critical?

On rotating equipment, production lines and rolling mills, alignment directly affects the service life and efficiency of machines. Even a sub-millimetre deviation in an axis turns into a serious problem over time. Alignment is not about a set-up “looking good”; it is about placing it within a measurable accuracy class.

Why does alignment drift?

Even if a machine is aligned perfectly at first installation, that alignment can drift over time:

  • Thermal expansion — parts that grow at operating temperature shift the cold-installation values.
  • Ground settlement — movement of the foundation and frame slowly displaces the axis.
  • Vibration and load — bolt loosening and repeated loads affect the connections.
  • Post-maintenance errors — part replacement or dismantling and reassembly can disturb the alignment.

For this reason alignment is not a one-off operation but a condition that needs to be verified periodically.

The consequences of misalignment

The cost of a misaligned axis often builds up unnoticed:

  • Early wear in bearings and seats
  • Increased vibration and noise
  • Extra load on the coupling, energy loss and reduced efficiency
  • Unexpected failure and unplanned downtime

On a production line, the hourly cost of unplanned downtime is often far above the total cost of the measurement service. An alignment survey is the insurance that pays that cost in advance.

How is it measured?

For precise alignment, working by eye or with simple hand tools is not enough. In the field AKPRO measures:

  • axis straightness and positional deviations with a high-precision total station,
  • height differences and deviations from vertical with a digital level.

The measurement is carried out with a defined reference axis, under conditions close to the machine’s working state. This prevents the “correct on paper but misaligned in operation” situation.

The difference that correct reporting makes

The value of a measurement emerges when the result is conveyed clearly to the installation team. The delivered machine alignment report contains:

  • the direction and magnitude of the deviation (at which point, by how much),
  • reference values for correction,
  • a before / after comparison and tolerance analysis.

Thanks to this clarity, the maintenance team intervenes with measured values rather than guesswork. Correct alignment both lowers maintenance cost and protects production continuity.
